Welcome to the Family: What to Expect at Your First Visit

By Dr. Justin Raanan
Dental Care of Brentwood

Walking into a new dental office can sometimes feel a bit like the first day of school. You might be wondering who you will meet, what the environment will be like, and most importantly, what the doctor is going to say about your smile. I completely understand those feelings. That is why, from the moment you step into our practice, my goal is to make you feel like you have just arrived at a friend’s home.

I am Dr. Justin Raanan, and I want to personally welcome you to the family. I believe that modern dentistry isn’t just about fixing teeth; it is about building a relationship based on trust, transparency, and a shared goal of keeping you healthy for life. When you schedule your first visit with us, you aren’t just a name on a chart. You are a partner in your own healthcare.

Many patients ask me what makes our initial appointment different. The answer lies in our comprehensive approach. We don’t rush. We listen. To help put your mind at ease, I want to walk you through exactly what happens during your New Patient Exam and why this visit is the most important step you will take toward a healthier future.

Setting the Stage: It Starts Before You Sit Down

The experience begins before you even sit in the dental chair. We know that paperwork and insurance details can be a headache, which is why our front desk team works hard to streamline everything for you. When you walk in, you will be greeted by name and with a smile. We take pride in our office environment. It is designed to be calming and modern, moving away from the “clinical” and cold feeling of the past.

We invite you to relax. If you have any anxiety—which is incredibly common—please tell us right away. We are a judgment-free zone. Whether it has been six months or six years since your last dental visit, we are just happy you are here today.

The Conversation: Listening First, Looking Second

Before I pick up a mirror or look at a single X-ray, I want to talk to you. This is the part of the New Patient Exam that I value the most. I want to know your history, your concerns, and your goals. Do you have tooth pain? Do your gums bleed when you brush? Are you unhappy with the color or shape of your teeth?

This conversation helps me understand not just your oral health, but who you are. Perhaps you have a big wedding coming up, or maybe you have dealt with sensitive teeth for years and just want relief. By understanding your motivations and fears, I can tailor the exam to fit your needs. This is a two-way street, and your input guides everything we do.

Data Gathering: The High-Tech Difference

Once we have chatted, we move on to gathering the necessary data. Gone are the days of guessing what is happening between the teeth. We utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic technology to get a crystal-clear picture of your oral biology.

We typically start with digital radiographs (X-rays). If you are worried about radiation, you should know that digital sensors reduce radiation exposure significantly compared to old-school film. These images allow me to see things the naked eye cannot, such as:

  • Cavities forming between teeth.
  • The health and level of the bone supporting your teeth.
  • Issues with the roots or nerves.
  • The status of previous fillings or crowns.

In addition to X-rays, we often use intraoral cameras. This is a small wand that takes high-definition photos of your teeth. I love this tool because it allows me to show you exactly what I see on a screen right in front of you. Instead of me just telling you that you have a cracked tooth, I can show you the crack. This transparency is vital to our relationship.

The Clinical Evaluation: A Whole-Body Approach

Now we move into the physical part of the New Patient Exam. This is far more than just “counting teeth.” As a dentist with a deep focus on periodontics (gum health) and overall wellness, I look at the mouth as a window to the rest of your body.

1. The Periodontal Screening

Your gums are the foundation of your smile. If the foundation isn’t strong, the house cannot stand. During this phase, we gently measure the space between your teeth and gums using a tiny ruler. These measurements help us determine if you have gum disease (periodontitis).

This is a critical step. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47.2% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease. Because gum disease is often painless in its early stages, many people don’t even know they have it until we measure these pockets. Catching this early is key to preventing tooth loss and protecting your heart and immune system.

2. The Oral Cancer Screening

This is a quick but life-saving part of the visit. I will examine your tongue, the floor of your mouth, your throat, and the soft tissues of your cheeks. I also check your jaw joints (TMJ) and the muscles of your neck. We look for any unusual bumps, white or red patches, or asymmetries. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early, so we perform this check on every single patient during their initial exam.

3. The Restorative Check

Finally, I examine every tooth individually. I check for cavities, wear and tear from grinding (bruxism), and the integrity of existing dental work. I am looking for structural issues that could cause pain or breakages down the road.

Connecting the Dots: The Oral-Systemic Link

One thing I always emphasize during the exam is the connection between your mouth and your overall health. You cannot have a healthy body with an unhealthy mouth. Science has shown us that the bacteria involved in gum disease can travel through the bloodstream and affect other organs.

Research suggests meaningful associations between oral health and systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. By taking your New Patient Exam seriously, we are actually helping you manage your overall wellness. It is fascinating to see how improving your gum health can sometimes help manage other inflammatory conditions in the body.

The Consultation: Creating Your Roadmap

After the clinical exam is complete, sit back up. We aren’t done yet. I don’t just hand you a bill and send you on your way. We take the time to review everything we found—together.

I will pull up your X-rays and photos on the monitor. I will explain the condition of your gums and teeth in plain English, not confusing medical jargon. If you have perfect health, we will celebrate that and discuss how to maintain it. If there are issues that need attention, we will categorize them:

  • Urgent Care: Issues that are causing pain or infection right now.
  • Restorative Needs: Cavities or broken teeth that need fixing before they get worse.
  • Preventative Strategy: Cleanings, sealants, or night guards to protect your teeth.
  • Cosmetic Goals: Whitening, veneers, or straightening to give you the smile of your dreams.

We will co-discover the best path forward. I will give you my expert recommendation, but ultimately, you are in the driver’s seat. We will create a prioritized treatment plan that fits your schedule, your lifestyle, and your budget.

Addressing Dental Anxiety

If reading about exams and scrapers makes you nervous, you are not alone. It is estimated that approximately 36% of the population suffers from dental anxiety, with another 12% suffering from extreme dental fear. I want to assure you that my team is trained to handle this with compassion.

We offer various comfort amenities and, if necessary, sedation options to make your visits easier. The New Patient Exam is the perfect time to test the waters. Since we rarely do invasive treatment on the very first visit (unless you are in an emergency), it is a low-stress way to get to know us and build that essential trust.

Cleaning: To Clean or Not to Clean?

A common question I get is, “Will I get my teeth cleaned on the first visit?” The answer is: usually, yes! However, it depends on what we find during the exam.

If your gums are healthy, our hygienist will perform a standard prophylaxis (cleaning) to remove plaque and tartar and polish your teeth. However, if we diagnose periodontal disease during the exam, a standard cleaning might not be enough. In those cases, we may need to schedule a deeper, more specialized cleaning to properly treat the infection and allow your gums to heal. We will never perform a treatment without explaining why it is necessary and getting your permission first.

Financial Clarity and No Surprises

We know that the cost of dental care is a major factor for everyone. Before you leave, our treatment coordinator will sit down with you to go over the financial aspect of your plan. We believe in total transparency—no hidden fees, no surprise bills.

We will check your insurance benefits to see what is covered and help you maximize them. If you don’t have insurance or need help with a co-pay, we can discuss flexible financing options. Our goal is to remove the financial barrier so you can get the care you deserve. We view this as an investment in yourself, and we want to help you make it happen.

Why This Matters to Me

I chose this profession because I love seeing the transformation in people. I have seen patients come in hiding their smiles, in pain, or terrified of the dentist. After we work together, seeing them walk out confident, pain-free, and smiling is the best reward I can ask for.

Your New Patient Exam is the starting line. It is where we establish the baseline for your health. By being thorough now, we save you time, money, and discomfort in the future. Preventative care is the heart of my practice. I would much rather help you prevent a cavity today than fill one next year.
